"It was early 2011 and I had come to Eboundja because I had heard that a Chinese construction company was building a huge deep-sea port on Cameroon’s south coast. Right next to tiny Eboundja. The story begun a few years prior to my visit when Australian miners found iron ore deep in the Caeroon jungle. Numerous development plans followed. A new port would arise, with accompanying infrastructure. A project video showed the future vista of a whole new city on the coast, with 80.000 inhabitants, an airport and a fast train connection. The sleepy district capital of Kribi was to become one of the most important trade and industrial centres in this part of Africa. The project would be carried out by the China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC), and paid for by a loan from China.
